It was founded in 1964 with establishing the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. Following the merge of some of the treatment and educational units and organizations affiliated to the then Ministry of Health and "Melli University" (National University) in 1986, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences began its activities independently.Presently, the university benefits from 10 schools, admitting students in a wide and varied range of fields from 18 fellowships, 22 sub-specialties, 15 specialties, 28 PhDs, 3 general medical fields (medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy), to 56 majors at MSC and BSC levels. The university also benefits from the full time and invaluable cooperation of 1200 academic staff that educates and train some 9000 students.The university runs 3 research institutes, and 52 research centers.In addition to educating students and research, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences is responsible for providing and supervising health for more the 5 million citizens who live in northern and eastern parts of Tehran, and some of the cities next to the capital.The university is basically government funded and its fundamental cornerstones include the Board of Trustees, chancellor, and the University Council. Furthermore, 7 vice-chancellors in academic & education, research, health, treatment, food & drug, logistics, and students affairs are the main wings of the university.
