City Government/Municipal Government - Cocoa, FL, US
NVHS was formed by veterans for the sole purpose of locating and assisting >4,500 homeless veterans living in parks, forests, and on streets of Central Florida. Our mission is clear: "To Eliminate Homelessness among Veterans in Central Florida"... and we have accomplished much to this end. We offer a very unique service to the community in that we physically go out into the field searching for the veterans, providing supplies when we find them, and work with other organizations to get them out of the woods and back into society again. NVHS has 5 main programs: Search and Rescue - Locate homeless vets in the woods and parks, provide outdoor gear and food to ease burden of homelessness in the short term, help with housing/benefits and employment to get them off the streets permanently, not enable their homelessness. Stand Down - Stand Down is a day when the community comes together to serve, offer hope, services, counseling, food, supplies, and a lifeline to veterans living without. Stand Down offers veterans medical, dental, chiropractic, legal, benefit help, counseling, and job placement service as well as survival supplies, clothing, 2 hot meals, non-perishable food to take with them, haircuts, socks, shoes or boots and sundry items. Seasonal Support - a Morale Improvement program. Provide hotel rooms to homeless vets during inclement weather, distribute different holiday meals to the field, bring 50 homeless vets into hotels for Christmas Eve/Day with presents/meals provided and more. Transitional Housing - Capable of providing 17 homeless veterans with transitional housing for a period of 90 days to 24 months, during which the veterans are assisted with developing individualized plans to get them back on their feet again. PTSA - this program was designed to create and offer post traumatic stress Awareness, Action, and Anonymity to those who may be dealing with PTSD, and provide information about PTSD to the community at large.
