Environmental Services & Clean Energy - Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Founded in 2011, Naturalus is a Mexican 501(c)3 equivalent non-profit organization with the mission of educating and promoting environmental conservation and recycling to protect the Tijuana-San Diego region ecosystems. Mexico is currently the 6th top waste producer in the world, and Tijuana being one of Mexico's most populated and most important city, has no large scale recycling program whatsoever. Tijuana produces more than 620,000 tons of trash per year, and only 5% of it is recycled. As a result, lots of trash flows through the Tijuana River into the San Diego wild ecosystems. It is estimated that as much as 10 million plastic bottles flow into San Diego every year, costing the City of San Diego millions of dollars in cleanup and habitat restoration. In order to solve this environmental issue from its source, Naturalus implements recycling programs at schools and at various businesses to provide the Tijuana community practical and close to home locations where they can recycle their trash.
