Primary/secondary Education - Morganton, North Carolina, United States
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) was awarded $58 million by approval of the 2016 Connect NC statewide bond referendum to construct a second campus in Morganton. NCSSM-Morganton will extend world-class programs to more of North Carolina's most promising students while also serving as a catalyst for increased educational and economic development opportunities for communities in western NC. The development of a master plan and a comprehensive advance planning period determined that optimizing the site in Burke County will require an additional $20 million to construct a campus equivalent to the standard of the Durham campus and the UNC system. In June 2018, the state of North Carolina appropriated an additional $15 million to fund the construction of the campus. NCSSM is committed to raising the remaining capital amount needed through private support. The infusion of these funds will ensure opening of a facility in the the fall of 2021 that will draw 300 talented students to the foothills of western North Carolina for a world-class academic experience in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.
