Neighborhood School provides transformative, personalized, justice-centered learning to children from all family structures and of all economic means. Intentionally small, Neighborhood School is a 60 student, K-6, independent school with a commitment to creating a learning community that promotes social justice and helping children flourish to their fullest potential. The school is divided into four classroom levels, containing grades K-6. This approach offers children an opportunity to develop a two-year relationship with their teacher and exposure to multi-age groupings. Our youngest students are in a class of 12, older students' class size is 16, and our student:teacher ratio is 4:1. In these classes, students learn about themselves, others, and how to form an authentic community in a setting that allows for deeper and broader relationships between students and teachers. Teachers at NS take advantage of curricular autonomy to design learning environments whereStudents' individual learning needs are centered in the teachingStudents are nurtured and nurture each other to be kind, curious, informed, and literate Teachers integrate arts, science, technology and the humanities through experiential, thematic studies led by questions, fueled by research, framed by reflection and expressed in multiple creative channelsStudents gain self-respect and agency in their own learningParents have opportunities to be involved in the life of the school and in the lives of other school families. Ultimately, Neighborhood School nurtures a lifelong love for learning and appreciation for learning communities. Students emerge with respect for oneself and an understanding of ethical citizenship in a small community and in the larger world.
