Who are Neighbourhood Midwives? Neighbourhood Midwives (NM) is the UK's first employee owned midwifery social enterprise. We launched in South London in July 2013. NM has been created by a small group of independent (non-NHS) midwives in response to three vital and time-critical challenges: • a widely recognised need to offer more women greater choice in their maternity care – and ultimately to provide better outcomes for mums and babies; • an ongoing crisis in midwifery as a result of the rapidly rising birthrate coupled with a shortage of midwives; and • a new EU requirement for mandatory indemnity insurance, due to be implemented in October 2014 for all healthcare professionals effectively meaning midwives can no longer be self-employed. Neighbourhood Midwives' mission is to increase the range of choices available to women by offering a community-based caseload midwifery service. There is a powerful evidence base which has established that ‘caseload midwifery' – where a woman receives care from the same midwife from the start of her pregnancy through birth to the end of the postnatal period – results in better outcomes for both the mother and the baby and is much preferred by many women. This is a choice the NHS cannot consistently offer today. Our ultimate aim is to provide an NHS-commissioned service, free to women at point of need. In the first instance we are building track record through supporting women who are able to self-fund. As a midwifery mutual Neighbourhood Midwives has adopted a uniquely transformative approach to our profession. Our aim is to combat the stress and burnout that drive attrition rates in our current system. By making midwives owners within their own business, we give them greater responsibility and autonomy, and a thriving partnership culture which supports innovative provision of 24/7 individualised care that protects not only the safety of women and babies but also the well-being of midwives.
