Non-Profit - Valley Forge, PA, US
Networks for Training and Development, Inc. is a small non-profit organization "dedicated to promoting inclusive communities through training, technical assistance, and demonstration". While originally founded in 1992 to assist people with developmental disabilities to become more valued and accepted members of their communities and to break down the antiquated attitudes of segregation, our wings have expanded greatly.... to recognizing that issues of inclusion, fighting segregation, and community building are common threads that need nurturance for all of us. 15 years later, we have carved out a reputation for innovation and, yes, sometimes a radical approach to many systemic issues. We have assisted other non-profits to form, helped organizations creatively scribe new directions, supported and taught others how to help hundreds of people thought to be "unemployable" to find value and worth, heard many and helped share the wishes and dreams of thousands who didn't know they could or should dream, have literally assisted hundreds to find their voice, and have been hand-holders to more than we can count to rethink their own personal values and attitudes and to redefine who they were in this world. Networks is also known for "practicing what we preach", i.e. putting our own notions about how inclusion might work to the test within our own organization and in our lives. And we have committed ourselves to openly share our very real experiences and struggles in all our activities. We have, to a large degree, seen the vision of Networks come alive in the many people we have worked with directly and indirectly as friends and colleagues. We have learned that an organization dedicated to promoting inclusive communities can make a difference.... in the lives of people with disabilities, in the lives of their families and friends, and in the way in which organizations and communities think about, support, and embrace all their members.
