Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a specialized form of soft tissue work that treats a specific manifestation of muscular dysfunction known as trigger points. These trigger points if untreated can cause many problems involving range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, and muscle firing patterns. Today, NMT is used mostly in the massage field. NMT work restores the balance between the musculoskeletal system and the central nervous system. When there is a problem in the musculoskeletal system pain receptors known as nociceptors, send the message to the central nervous system (CNS) and tell it there is a problem. The CNS then sends signals back to that area usually in the form of pain. NMT corrects this feedback mechanism by inactivating the trigger points and thus relieving the pain, tenderness, and associated dysfunction. Below is a list of the things NMT is currently being used to treat. • Back Pain • Brachial Plexus Entrapment • Bursitis • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Chronic Pain • Dental Occlusion Problems • Headaches • Joint Immobility • Migraines • Muscle cramping • Postural Distortions • Neck Pain• Repetitive Strain Injuries • Skeletal Problems • Sciatica • Scoliosis • Spinal Disc Herniation • Sports Injuries • Sprains • Strains • TMJ Dysfunction • Stress • Whiplash• Arthritis
