Motion Pictures & Film - London, England, United Kingdom
New East Cinema is a London-based collective whose curatorial approach concentrates on unconventional films from the New East region in an attempt to explore the ways new social identities are being played out in the post-socialist era.The New East, a term including post-Communist and post-Soviet states from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, has been misrepresented in the West, primarily due to the fact that the region has not been explored at width. Believing that cinema is one of the most appropriate media to give us insights into a culture, we deliver independent national New East cinema to the UK, often directly from the festival circuit, in an attempt to substitute the mystification of the region with understanding.Currently hosted by Barbican Centre, Calvert 22, and HOME Manchester, New East Cinema is organised by Olya Sova, Teodosia Dobriyanova, Karina Gechtman, Evgeny Gusyatinsky and Lucia González Mantecón.
