Palm Court Orchestras were popular in the 1920′s and 30′s for playing instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality, delivering a stunning, rich palette of beautifully evocative original music. Australian pianist/composer Gemma Turvey formed The New Palm Court Orchestra (NPCO) in 2011, bringing together some of Melbourne's best jazz, classical and improvising musicians to perform her compositions which combine a classical aesthetic with jazz and world influences. The NPCO is a chamber jazz ensemble with a core of nine players lead by Gemma Turvey at the piano and featuring double bass, drum kit, string quartet, clarinet and French horn. Additional instrumentalists also join from time to time. The NPCO released their album ‘Landscapes for a Mind's Eye' in 2012 to critical acclaim and in 2013 completed a highly successful East Coast tour of Australia, including stand out performances at the Sydney Opera House's Utzon Room, The Great Hall in Canberra and the Noosa Long Weekend Festival.
