NewVert, a development stage medical device company focused in unique spinal repair solutions, has developed a spinal annular repair device. Lumbar discectomy has been criticized in the medical literature for producing unreliable results. It has been suggested that approximately 20% to 40% of patients have sciatica or recurring back pain after discectomy surgery and 5% to 15% will have recurrent disc herniation. NewVert has developed a novel implant, called the Octopus, to close the opening pathway following a discectomy.Newvert has successfully conducted a feasibility biomechanical study at the Institute of Orthopedic Research and Biomechanics, University of UIm, Germany, collaborating with Prof. Wilke, and is currently working on pre-clinical testing.
