Founded in 2010, Next Step Up is a mentoring and tutoring program in which local college students provide mentoring and tutoring services to local high school students; providing in-school tutorials, after school tutorials, and community involvement. Our mission is to enhance the overall student: academically and socially by providing assistance and mentorships through the development of healthy relationships, and the realization of academic achievement in and out of high school. Through our program we work to address a student's full range of needs by cultivating the skills they need to use their heads, hearts, and hands. Our in-school tutorial services provide individualized assistance to students during the school day, alleviating burden from teachers. Our after school program provide help to students who need a deeper dive into subjects to better understand content, prepare for college entrance exams, and homework. Our mentoring helps students who may not have guidance understand how to navigate their day-to-day challenges (from relationship issues, to friendship rifts, to family dynamics, to balancing work school and extracurricular activities, to helping the students create a trajectory for their lives). We not only prepare high school students to succeed, but we prepare a cadre of emotionally sound intellectuals who can proudly enter into higher education institutions and workforce with proper preparation and credentials.
