NHS National Genetics and Genomics Education Centre Details
The NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre was set up in 2005 as a key initiative of the Genetics White Paper. Initially the Centre's remit was to support healthcare education so that patients and families with mostly inherited genetic conditions could benefit from the services then available. Supporting education in genetics continues to be a key component of the Centre's work, but this has been expanded to include genomic healthcare. The Centre is working to support health professionals in their understanding of the rapid developments in genomics and their implications for clinical practice. The Human Genomics Strategy Group report ‘Building on our inheritance: Genomic technology in healthcare' (2012), confirmed the important role of the Centre in supporting non-genetics healthcare professionals in understanding the implications of genetics and genomics in clinical practice and in supporting the educators of pre and post-registration healthcare professionals. On the 1st September 2013 the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre(NGEDC) became the NHS National Genetics and Genomics Education Centre (NGGEC).
