Farming - Grimsby, Ontario, Canada
The Niagara Farm Project is a collaborative, non profit organization that recognizes food production is an important ecosystem service that is central to human welfare. Our goal is to develop a system of farming, specific to Niagara, which establishes a self reliant food economy. We work largely within the so called "barter system" and use the food we produce as the currency of our organization. General nature of the work needing completion: Niagara Farm Project has multiple locations, all of which we are helping to re-establish mini-ecosystems on, using permaculture principles. This involves everything from soil testing to the practical application of water conservation methods. Livestock will be added to one of the locations in Grimsby for the spring of 2016, which is our main focus over the winter. We are currently learning about heritage breeds, and figuring out all the rules and regulations of the "meat" industry. This is a priority of the organization at this time. As well, when we learn, the public learns along side us so we are making sure to improve upon the ways in which we communicate. The Niagara Farm Project is an infrastructure. It allows for the connectivity necessary to farm Niagara as a whole. It's just simply a way for us to help each other.
