Educational and Cultural MissionOur books written for beginning readers PK-3 feature historical fiction stories about early African American, Latino, and Native American heroes to increase the 4th grade reading proficiency of African American, Latino, and Native American children.Rethinking Books for Early ReadersWe have developed the Easy Next Step reading system to support each child's literacy journey. The same story inspired by real-life heroes of color is written with the same illustrations for each foundational reading level from Grade K to Grade 3. We carefully select beginner sight words from each grade level to ensure that the overall reading level does not exceed the first half of the respective grade year. As a result, children are guaranteed a "beginner" book at each reading level from K-3.Now, when a child graduates to the next reading level, he or she can return to the familiar world and familiar characters of his or her favorite story and delve deeper into the action and dialogue. The known environment of the physical book will help ease the anxiety, fear, and frustration commonly experienced when presented with advanced vocabulary and sentence structures.Special FeaturesOur books include special features that integrate well public, private, and charter schools; homeschool; and community-based afterschool reading and ESL programs:- Curriculum Standards Mapping- Family Discussion Questions- Creative Activity Prompt- Sight Word List- Resource LinksEntrepreneurial MissionAccording to the Cooperative Children's Book Center, in 2015 only 28% of the books about African Americans were written and/or illustrated by African Americans compared to 31% for Native Americans; 41% for Latinos; and 61% for Asian Americans. Therefore, Nikki House Books exclusively seeks unpublished children's book authors and illustrators of color who have incredible talent but simply need the opportunity and support to shine.
