The dream was started in 2011 when the Van Wert City School District was awarded funds from the Ohio Schools Facility Commission to build a new facility . Individuals and businesses stepped up to the plate after Van Wert alumnus Scott Niswonger committed an initial $2 million to the project to build an enhanced auditorium. Six years and $9.9 million dollars later the building was completed and paid for entirely with private donations. The Van Wert City Schools and Van Wert County Foundation formed a separate foundation called the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation (VWAPAF). The Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio (NPAC) opened its doors March 15, 2007. Since then, the VWAPAF and Van Wert City Schools have combined to produce full seasons of professional performances, school performances, high school musicals, rentals, dance competitions and more. The NPAC hosts over 25,000 people each year from as many as 32 states and Canada. Artists of all genres have performed, along with Broadway and comedians, children's shows and more. Youth of all ages have performed on the stage in school performances, talent shows, with some of theprofessional shows and their own productions. When possible, master classes, pre-show lectures and more are available for patrons and students. Organizations and businesses throughout the region have utilized the Lecture Hall, Grand Lobby, Upper Lobby and Music Hall through rentals for meetings, banquets and receptions.
