Civic & Social Organization - Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
A safe haven for pets belonging to victims of domestic violence. The first full service animal sanctuary placed on the grounds of a domestic violence shelter to remove the barrier of entering shelter for safety when they had a pet. In Las Vegas, we began the work of saving pets in 2007 and in Reno we began the work of saving pets in 2018. Since opening, more than 1900 pets have been welcomed with their families right next door. We believe no one should be forced to choose between leaving their best friend behind to enter a domestic violence shelter or remaining in danger to save their pet. We believe the pets and their families are better together, especially during a crisis like experiencing violence and abuse. All services are provided at no charge to the client. The injured pets are provided medical care as soon as they arrive. The pets are fed, groomed, walked or exercised by staff when the families are at work, in the hospital, or in court. Each day the pets and their families enjoy the time to cuddle, relax, and play. The pets help the families feel the unconditional love that leads to healing. The children feel safe because they have their precious friend to keep them company. The safety of the campuses keep the victims and their pets protected from the abuser.Staff trained in animal care are present at each site to determine the needs of each pet and to assist the families to meet the needs through provision of food, leashes, bedding, medical attention, and education. The pet sanctuaries are open every day. Our excellent staff enjoy helping the pets, the families, and partnering with volunteers throughout the day. This team of professionals share their knowledge and compassion with every family and every pet.
