Fishery - Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Nortas was a leading producer of premium quality seafood before it was sold to Australia's largest salmon producer Tassal in 2003. Nortas employed over 200 people in several locations. The company was vertically integrated, controlling the complete production process from hatchery through to marine farms, processing and smoking of salmon products in its own modern facilities and ultimately sales and marketing of the finished product throughout Australia. Annual turnover was around $30 million at the time of the business sale. The business was developed by Tasmanian aquaculture pioneer Richard Doedens a former abalone diver who built a rainbow trout farm at National Park in Tasmania. With the advent of marine farming in Tasmania Richard joined forces with a Norwegian salmon farming company Noraqua and Nortas was born. The first marine farm was based on Bruny Island. Nortas operated a hatchery at National Park and marine farms at Bruny Is, Storm Bay (Tasmania's first off-shore marine farm) and Macquarie Harbour growing Atlantic salmon and ocean trout.
