North Dakota Reading Corps is working to close the literacy gap in North Dakota to help students become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade. Learning to read by 3rd grade is a critical benchmark that marks the shift from students learning to read to students reading to learn. These students are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school.Math Corps is an evidence-based math tutoring program delivered by AmeriCorps Members that provides 90 minutes of weekly tutoring to 4th-8th grade students in pairs to improve foundational math skills required for algebra readiness. We're passionate about impacting children across our state. ND Reading and Math Corps is a part of AmeriCorps. Each school year we hire new tutors for 10 months, teaching them critical skills that they can take into their future endeavors. Our tutors range from college students, parents, retirees, and gap-year students. We work together with area schools to provide tutoring to students that otherwise they don't have the resources to reach. These students don't qualify for specialized teaching under Title I, but don't yet meet grade-level proficiency. PreK tutors are embedded into childcare center classrooms to provide instruction to all children in the classroom. They work closely with the lead teacher to implement these strategies.
