The North West Cambridge Development is one of the largest capital projects in the history of the University of Cambridge, delivering a mixed-use urban extension to the City which contributes to the University's ambitions to remain a world-leading institution in academic and research. It's a long-term and ambitious plan to meet the growth needs for both City and University.The vision for the North West Cambridge Development is to create a new district and extension to the City, centredaround a mixed academic and urban community: a place that is sustainable,long-lasting and ambitious, offering a high quality of life to enhance both the City and the University. The size of the development allows for a sense of place to be created and the site includes:1,500 homes for University and College staff1,500 private houses for saleAccommodation for 2,000 postgraduates100,000 sqm of academic and research and development space of which up to 40% may be private research with University connection or Research InstitutesCommunity facilities such as a primary school, community centre, health centre, supermarket and local shopsA hotelCare homeSustainable transport provision including cycle waysSports Centre and playing fieldsPublic Open spaceThe centre of the development, called Eddington, focuses on the delivery of housing and community facilities as a priority to meet the housing supply shortage in Cambridge, and to establish a sense of place and community spirit as soon as residents arrived. The first phase comprises 700 homes for key University staff and a post-graduate student complex Swirles Court for 325 Girton College students. There are also facilities to support the local community, including the Storey's Field Centre community centre, the University of Cambridge Primary School, Sainsbury's supermarket, parklands, play areas and sports fields, as well as infrastructure to support connectivity for the development.
