The North Yorkshire Credit Union (NYCU) was created in 2006, as the York Credit Union, before being expanded and rebranded in May 2009. It was an independent, not-for-profit, financial co-operative, authorised by the Financial Services Authority and both owned and controlled by its members. Membership was available to everyone who lived or worked in North Yorkshire. NYCU was one of the UK's larger credit unions, managing around £2Million of members' funds, when it ceased trading on 31st October 2012 All members' funds were protected, following the liquidation, under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
