The NEGHC is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Northeast Georgia by being the leading resource for promoting a greater understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political history of the region.By collecting, cataloguing and preserving historical items, we maintain a unique collection of the history of this region. We provide a forum for engaging and educating an increasingly diverse audience by presenting exhibits, conducting programs, and enabling research. An important aspect of our outreach involves the development of partnerships with cultural, educational and historical institutions within the region.ExhibitsOur main exhibit, the Land of Promise, tells stories of those who have lived in Northeast Georgia and serves as a reminder that our region is a land of promise for everyone. We additionally have the Mathis Folk Art Gallery, the Ed Dodd Gallery, and our changing exhibits space. CollectionsOnly about 20% of the History Center's collection of historic artifacts is on display at any one time; the remainder is stored in the archives. Access is by appointment. Historic Structures & GardensOn our site is the 18th century cabin of Cherokee Indian White Path, originally constructed c. 1780, as well as the Herrin Blacksmith Shop. We also have the American Freedom Garden, where we pay tribute to America's service men and women, and a replica Victory Garden from World War II.Ada Mae Ivester Education CenterConsists of our classroom area as well as our Adventure Time! School tours; Forums for adult education; Family Days, a specially themed day for children and their families to explore a particular aspect of regional history; and Travel Trunks, themed "museums in a box."Cottrell Digital StudioThis internet-based outreach program provides downloadable, curriculum-focused webisodes for use by teachers throughout the state as well as direct-to-classroom live broadcast where students can interact with figures from the past.
