The Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation (NorwAI) will be aninternationally leading center for research-based innovation ondata-driven artificial intelligence. Its mission is to developtheories, methods and technologies for successful and responsibleexploitation of data-driven artificial intelligence, leading toindustrial innovations.The center includes Norway's strongest research communities onartificial intelligence and data science, and some of the mostambitious industrial locomotives. In addition to advancing thestate-of-the-art in AI research, the center will put special focus ontrustworthiness and sustainability. This means that all technologydevelopment at the center will include results from multi-disciplinaryresearch activities on societal impact and ethics, privacy andsecurity, and technology transparency. In order to achieve this,NorwAI has an initial domain focus in the industry areas of extendedIndustry 4.0, Telecom, Finance and Media, all of which are chosenbased on technology maturity, resources and ambitions, and societalimpacts. The center enables innovation not only from improvingexisting operations or transforming individual businesses, but alsofrom efficient transfer of knowledge and experiences betweenindustries in AI innovation ecosystems.NorwAI is hosted by the Department of Computer Science (IDI) atNTNU. In addition to NTNU, the center consortium consists of theUniversity of Oslo, the University of Stavanger, the researchinstitutes Norsk Regnesentral and SINTEF, and 11 leading industrycompanies. NorwAI will have close collaboration with theindustry-sponsored Norwegian Open AI Lab at NTNU, and it iscollaborating with some of the strongest AI research groups andnetworks at universities in Europe, US and China.
