Sports - Singapore, , Singapore
We were first founded in 2001 by the Singapore Mountaineers team, comprising pioneers in the mountaineering scene in Singapore. Our pioneers include Dr Robert Goh, Mr Edwin Siew, Ms Lulin Reutens and Dr Mok Ying Jang, who passed on not only mountaineering skills, but a passion for climbing to our inaugural team of members in MIR 1. Since then, the programme became an annual endeavour, which grew from strength to strength. MIR has since grown into a full-fledged club in NUS.To date, members of our community have climbed all over the world. Highlights have included the NUS Centennial Everest Expedition in 2005, which put the first born-and-bred Singaporean, Teo Yen Kai (an MIR 2 member and alumni) on the world's highest summit; the Singapore Women's Everest Team (SWET) which saw members Jane Lee and Sim Yi Hui (from MIR 3) part of; and the initiation of expeditions to climb Ong Siew May and Ong Teng Cheong Peaks in Kazakhstan as part of a partnership with Ong & Ong Foundation, which garnered front-page headlines on The Straits Times.Today, our mission to spread the spirit of mountaineering throughout the NUS community is being realised through our regular mountaineering courses and trips. In recent years, NUS students have embarked on their rites-of-passage as new MIR members first through their basic Technical Mountaineering Course (TMC) in the Himalayas, and many have gone on to fine-tune and pursue mountaineering further in places like the European Alps, New Zealand, the Tianshan mountain range, North and South America. In 2021, MIR celebrated its 20th anniversary through the publication of the book, Conjuring Mountains – a homage to the incredible journey the club and its community have had thus far.
