NVS is addressing the serious environmental problems associated with animal waste runoff in areas of high livestock concentration. In the US, livestock produce > 900 million tons of waste yearly. Livestock tends to concentrate in some rural areas, causing oversaturation of waste material In the soil. This oversaturation often leads to the leaching of pathogens, nitrates and phosphorous into our public waterways: often with catastrophic consequences. NVS is commercializing a new technology utilizing solid animal waste to create a bio oil. Using a chemical reforming process that combines elevated temperature & pressure in the absence of oxygen, the process transforms a complex distribution of organic molecules to yield bio oil. The bio-oil can be formulated into a versatile group of products to modify asphalt products & unique agricultural coatings.Treating the solids problem, however, solves only a portion of the problem, as many of the troubling compounds remain in the liquid waste fraction. Therefore, NVS is also working on an algae-based wastewater treatment technology to remove the nutrients contained in the liquid portion of the manure. Phosphorous in the waste water , for example, can be reduced from over 3,000 mg/L, to below 0.05 mg/L. The system offers farmers an affordable manure management option that lowers their carbon footprin and produces usable bio oil and algae suitable for feed supplements, fertilizer and BTU value.
