The NWU solar team is based in South Africa, working with limited resources to produce innovative and cost effective solutions for future mobility. We are also the current South African and African Challenger Class ChampionsIn 2012, eight engineering students embarked on a journey to build a solar powered vehicle to compete in the 2012 Sasol Solar Challenge (SSC). The Batmobile, as it was referred to by our competitors, competed, and won against twelve other teams, who among others were Japan, India and Wales. We are proud to announce that our Batmobile has since been donated to Olympus, a Maragon Private School, which will be taking in the 2014 Sasol Solar Challenge. For us, it is more than just winning a race, we would like to get school pupils excited about the possibilities of Science and Engineering. Our new carOur 2017 car, Naledi (Setswana for Star) will cost approximately R1,1 million (Only 73 000 USD) with this limited budget we aim to successfully compete against the best in the world with much larger budgets available to them. Our focusThe Faculty of Engineering and the Solar Car Team get involved in projects like these because WE CARE. We believe that by doing research on alternative energies, such as solar power, we not only provide communities with greener, safer and cheaper power but we also mobilise school pupils in their quest to become scientists, entrepreneurs and engineers.
