When Mets' Great John Franco and long time friend Gary Perone founded NYC Varsity League (NYCVL), they began with a simple idea—bring the Big Apple's best together on one diamond. With this player/scout duo at the helm, however, it quickly became so much more. Now in it's second year of operation, the NYCVL is one of the premier player development programs in the tri-state area. Open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, the six week fall league sponsored by Major League Baseball (MLB) provides its student-athletes with the ultimate Baseball education. Coached by a staff of homegrown Major Leaguers at Coney Island's MCU Park, players not only receive expert instruction, but they also gain first hand insight into the trials of making it to the next level. Furthermore, with the league's extended schedule, players have the opportunity to develop relationships with these coaches that last beyond the final out.The NYCVL program does not stop at instruction, though. Using their extensive Baseball network, Franco and Perone bring in a revolving door of college coaches and scouts looking for the next great New York City product. Such exposure, which usually comes only in costly showcases, is just another reason why the NYCVL remains truly unique. To further serve it's players, NYCVL's leadership additionally formed an advisory committee to help coordinate and promote the program. This group, consisting of officials from the region's most influential sporting organizations, is another component of NYCVL's in-depth development system. Its members include: MLB, Minor League Baseball, New York Professional Baseball Scouts Association, Big East Conference, City University of New York (CUNY), Public School Athletic Association (PSAL), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), Private School Athletic Association (PSAA), and the Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Association.
