The New York Naval Militia is the naval component of the New York State defense forces. As part of the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, the Naval Militia complements the Army and Air National Guard programs, as well as the New York State Guard.Since 1891 the Naval Militia has responded to emergencies and tasks throughout New York State, providing assistance and support at the direction of The Adjutant General.Nearly all (95%) of the Naval Militia is composed of federal reserve forces from the United States Marine Corps, Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. The New York Naval Militia is recognized by United States code (Title 10), and has established partnerships with many federal and state agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Border Patrol and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
