Nyungu Afrika is a social and environmental impact start-up whose mission to revolutionize periods by creating a new yardstick in the way menstruation is viewed in Africa by combining innovation, brilliant product design, and international best practices that put vaginal health, comfort, environmental sustainability, and community development at its core. Sanitary pads are basic needs used by women and girls for an average of 30 years from the onset of puberty. The majority of the entire human workforce is female and the penetration of menstrual products barely meets the need of this deprived and ever-growing market valued to reach 28 Billion dollars by 2022. 65% of women in Kenya are forced to choose between buying food or sanitary pads during menstruation, trade sex for pads, while others use cartons, blankets, and tissue papers which are hazardous and have health risks. In addition, most disposable pads are manufactured with dozens of chemicals and fall under the category of single-use plastics thus causing harmful health effects to women, chemical and air pollution in the environment.Nyungu Afrika was born out of the need to eliminate the harmful effects pads have on women, the environment and decentralize the pad manufacturing industry by integrating a circular economy model. We have achieved this by recycling and ethically manufacturing a patented bio-degradable, high-quality, and non-toxic disposable pad that delivers on comfort and performance using pineapple and maize corn waste that is usually burnt or left to rot after harvest. Kenya, being one of the largest exporters of pineapples and an even larger maize-consuming country in Africa presents a huge economic opportunity to profit from this waste recycling that also has other composite products. Our revolutionary products and business model have the capacity to convert the problem of period poverty in Africa into a responsible social innovation that cuts across 9 sustainable development goals (SDG)s
