New Zealand cycle tourism into the spotlight in February 2009 when Prime Minister John Key enthused on the idea of a National Cycleway. This concept has since morphed into a series of "Great Rides" utilizing existing infrastructure as well as many of the already popular mountain bikes in this country. The Government has set aside $50 million to develop these Great Rides - but no money for actually marketing them; this being left to the communities and regions that host the rides or existing tourism and biking infrastructure and Tourism New Zealand. While many of these rides are now in development - some will have large sections rideable for the 2010/11 summer season - case studies in Australia and the UK show that a lack of a centralised marketing effort mean't the cycle trails in these destinations fell short of their potential.NZbyBike has been formed to market cycle tourism in New Zealand. Launched in August this year NZbyBike provides extensive information not only of the newly developed "Great Rides", but also many of the classic rides in New Zealand such as the Queen Charlotte Track, The 42nd Traverse and hopefully the Heaphy Track, as well as many of the popular regional rides.New Zealanders and International visitors are able to gather information on these rides as well as places to stay, eat and drink and activities to do along the way. These services beyond just the rides are very important to those that like to combine cycling and holidaying. Cycle tourists spend on average 1.5 times more per day than any other people on holiday. Moreover, already International cycling visitors to New Zealand number approximately the same as those that come here for golf. NZbyBike is taking the New Zealand cycle tourism industry to the world through the NZbyBike.com website, an establish travel agent and travel wholesaler programme including a GDS for these agents to use for bookings and enquiries, attendances at key international trade shows, and a trade manual.
