The Ocala Marion Transportation Planning Organization is a federally-mandated public agency responsible for allocating state and federal funds to roadway, freight, transit, bicycle and pedestrian projects within Marion County. The TPO serves the cities of Belleview, Dunnellon, Ocala and Marion County. The TPO was established in 1981 after the 1980 Census determined the urbanized area of the City of Ocala exceeded a 50,000-population threshold. Initially, the TPO planning area was limited to the Ocala Urbanized Area. In response to tremendous growth outside the urbanized area, the planning boundaries were expanded to include the entire county in the late 1980s.
