In 2007 the West Australian Aboriginal Dance Company was founded to pursue the vision of creating an Aboriginal contemporary dance company based in Western Australia. A Board and an Advisory Committee of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians were established enabling further research into the vision. In 2009 a focus group was held with key stakeholders from the arts, Aboriginal, government, training, corporate and tourism communities drawing key issues to form the basis of a Feasibility Study. In 2010 Woodside generously sponsored a feasibility study which was conducted over a period of 15 months, engaging with over 800 key stakeholders. The outcomes and recommendations from the Woodside Feasibility Study have formed the platform on which the company has developed and is now Ochre Contemporary Dance Company. In 2011 the Company began to perform on a project basis with commissioned works premiering at various government and corporate openings and gala functions which increased our momentum and visibility. In addition the company built on the research and development of a creative brief for an inaugural production which was staged in November 2012. Workshops with Wongi Elders in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Region, and school workshops were conducted engaging the community in the Seven Sisters Story from the region and developing the brief for our first full-length work at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, Diaphanous: seeing through and beyond.
