Established in 2016, Offploy is a social enterprise which helps organisations realise the commercial and societal benefits of ex-offender employment, while supporting those with previous convictions into meaningful, mentored, and sustainable work. The Offploy team, of which 62% have first-hand experience of the criminal justice system, manages the entire recruitment process from start to finish on behalf of both employer and employee – enabling businesses to tackle this complex area of HR and employment law with ease.Change comes not simply by ‘brokering' jobs but also supporting the candidate and their probation officer to get them ‘work ready'. This includes building confidence in applying for roles and interviewing, to providing support ahead of their start date, as well as on payday.Offploy works with companies to become a ‘bolt-on' HR department for their new ex-offender recruits – covering everything from sourcing staff and undergoing an initial interview process, through to educating your current workforce and mentoring candidates. Why employ someone with a criminal conviction?Ministry of Justice figures show that, on average, only 17% of former prisoners manage to gain employment within a year of release – but those who do are up to 9% less likely to reoffend. In addition, 81% of people believe that businesses employing ex-offenders are making a positive contribution to society – that's why it's really important to get the topic into conversation.Reoffending rates cost the UK £15 billion annually, but a vast talent pool is currently untapped because of organisations' previous reluctance to hire ex-offenders. We are glad to see that employers are no longer asking if they should hire people with convictions but instead how they can hire people with convictions. It's our job to help businesses tackle their recruitment challenges at the same time as addressing a wider societal issue. www.offploy.org
