Economics as the ‘science of household economy' and ecology as the ‘science of ecosystems' have their common etymological root in the Greek word ‘oikos'. The founding members took this name to show the common origin of economy and the environment. With time, the field of interest became broader including topics of social responsibility. Nowadays, oikos stands for collegiate commitment to economical, ecological and social sustainability. oikos Edmonton is part of an international student-lead organization which works at the local level to instil values of sustainability in the business leaders of tomorrow. In line with oikos International's mission, oikos Edmonton promotes sustainability among the students and to support the integration of sustainability issues into business and economics education and specifically focuses on developing students' practical skills.
