Okunoto Endenmura Boutique Salt Farm is located in Suzu, at the tip of the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture. Okunoto Endenmura continues the practice of a local Japanese salt manufacturing process called Agehama-shiki, which originated over 400 years ago. In addition natural sea salt production, Okunoto Endenmura manages the sale of salt produced on the premises as well as the maintenance of a salt museum/local product shop or "michi no eki." The Okunoto Endenmura facility opened its doors in 1995 to enhance tourism and ensure the future continuance of this traditional Agehama-shiki method. In addition to providing tours of its salt resource museum, Okunoto Endenmura offers a "salt-making experience" program in which visitors can witness and experience first-hand the production of Agehama salt using traditional methods. We are also involved with an exciting environmental project initiative called the Satoyama/Satoumi initiative (human land and sea interaction), which is carried out by the United Nations University support unit in Kanazawa. Since our salt production strives to maintain the natural human interaction with the mountains and sea surrounding us, not only does our production carry cultural significance, but it is also organic and environmentally sustainable.
