One Billion Strong is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization working to advance the rights of persons with disabilities and to facilitate participation, equality, and inclusion in society. The mission of One Billion Strong, so named to signal the world population of persons with disabilities, is to ensure that the obligations in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are made accessible through participatory education and implemented through innovative advocacy and example. One Billion Strong is managed by an international Board of Directors, an Advisory Board, and an Honorary Board of First Ladies. One Billion Strong enables and empowers persons with disabilities to realize their right to equality and full participation within society. Working from the premise that the full participation of persons with disabilities in society is all too often obstructed by barriers – physical, attitudinal, informational and legal barriers among many others – One Billion Strong is committed to confronting the injustice that results in civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights violations against 15% of the world's population and its largest minority. By raising awareness through worldwide media, global educational programmes, advocacy, capital and community projects, One Billion Strong leads individuals and societies to recognize and uphold the rights of persons with disabilities around the world.
