Open H2O, a Non-Profit Multinational organization is working towards developing low-cost open source technology to clean up oil spills in oceans called Protei. The vision for Protei is a fleet of unmanned sailing drones with articulated hulls that can collect oil spills from the sea without posing risk to human health and also be able to solve a range of problems such as plastic debris collection in the ocean,radioactivity sensing and physical oceanography. The first prototype of Protei was developed in 2011 in collaboration with V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam, NL.With its existing diverse competence in interaction design, mechatronics, naval architecture and artificial intelligence , the Open H2O community is growing and calls for more technologists to join and help build the product and contribute to the cause. Everyone is welcome to join, contribute, modify, produce, distribute the design and share their findings.Protei from Open H2O has been generously funded by over 300 backers on Kickstarter.
