The Ottawa Power Wheelchair Hockey League (OPWHL) is a floor hockey league, established in the fall of 2009, to provide a quality, organized, recreational and social program for people with disabilities. All of the players use power wheelchairs and have limited or no upper body strength and/or mobility and yet they can play hockey and significantly benefit from participating in a competitive sport with the use of their electric wheelchair. Participants have many different disabilities, although the majority of players have either Cerebral Palsy or Muscular Dystrophy. The OPWHL is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, an Affiliate of the CEWHA (Canadian Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association) and a member of NAPHA (North American Power Hockey Association). Mission StatementTo provide those who require an electric wheelchair for daily mobility, an opportunity to participate in a recreational environment that exemplifies the values of working together towards a common goal, and aims to boost its players' self-esteem and desire for competition.
