Civic & Social Organization - Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Organization Unbound is a global learning community of activists, community workers, social entrepreneurs, researchers and educators who believe that the best way for our organizations to effect deep and lasting change is to embody it. Since 2010, we have been learning from and supporting social purpose organizations seeking to strengthen their impact by more consciously aligning their internal practices with their broader social change goals. All too often, there is a disconnect between an organization's social purpose and its internal practices. We see community development organizations that don't feel like communities, environmental NGO whose members rarely experience the principles of sustainability in their day-to-day work, and advocacy groups whose cultures and tactics reinforce the values of the very systems they are trying to disrupt. In contrast, the most vibrant and socially catalytic organizations pursue a strategy of ‘Expressive Change'. They ask themselves, "How can we become living expressions of the change we seek?" They are schools where teachers learn and grow, food banks where staff and volunteers are nourished, hospitals where doctors are healed, social justice groups where activists find their visions of a better world starting to take root in their own offices. When an organization experiences its social purpose in its day-to-day work, it becomes more intelligent about how to bring that purpose into the broader world. It develops a lived understanding of the challenges that arise and of how best to respond to them in innovative, practical, resilient ways. We envision a world where this inside-out approach to change is the norm rather than the exception. To this end, we:- Offer accompaniment to people experimenting with the practice of expressive change in their organizations.- Facilitate and convene global learning exchanges.- Develop self-guided learning materials to support on-the-ground experimentation.
