Hospital & Health Care - New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
Since its founding in 1878 during the Yellow Fever epidemic, Orleans Parish Medical Society (OPMS) has been the voice of physicians, their practices and patients. In the last several months, we have been responsive to physicians' needs during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing resources and regular communication from the CDC and local and state public health officials.Together with Jefferson Parish Medical Society (JPMS), we have coordinated nine physician update conference calls involving state and local health officials, and specialists from local medical training programs and major hospitals. The conferences provided information about testing, therapeutic initiatives, clinical trials, mental health and palliative care. Also, we had presentations from noted speakers on pandemic history, health inequities, and availability of stimulus programs.More than 1,700 physicians benefited directly from these conferences. By working collaboratively, OPMS & JPMS have provided a critical service to physicians. This joint work of both organizations is expanding and will provide even more opportunities to serve you in the future.OPMS's heritage is rich and woven into the fabric of New Orleans. Its impact has been felt in the public health arena as a leader in polio eradication, the smoking cessation movement, and EMS protocol development and oversight. In the medical practice environment, OPMS, together with the Louisiana State Medical Society, has advocated for significant legislative and regulatory reform to help physicians address the changes which have come with third party insurance and government mandates.
