OSIS is targeting the global market for oil spill cleanup, detection, and prevention, which is predicted to grow significantly over the next decade. The growth is driven by increased commercial offshore activities, high clean-up costs, and the growing concerns of governments, financial institutions and the public about environmental issues. Reducing the risk of oil spill disasters is essential for protecting the environment and reducing economic losses. Oil spill sensing technology constitutes an important component of oil spill disaster management. Remote sensing technologies can help to identify parties responsible for pollution (surveillance), offshore oil exploration/production/transportation operations to identify minor spills before they cause widespread damage (monitoring) and to assist operations in the event of a significant oil spill (cleanup). Current remote sensing technology can only reliably identify the area of an oil spill not the thickness. Detecting the 10% of the oil spill that contains 90% of the volume would dramatically improve successful clean-up operations.
