Because we believe that students are the most authentic voices for what's happening in their public schools, OSOM works with students in diverse low-income schools to design and produce publications for their local community. In addition to their own voices, students include in their publications articles and letters written by school faculty and community members, including parents and local businesses and agencies. The content of these publications includes suggested school improvements, how the community can get involved, and goals for the education of local youth. Through these publications, students gain confidence in themselves and they increase communication and collaboration between schools and their local community. The publications are distributed to the whole school, to parents, to the local community, and to the broader community. We call this student-driven public engagement because the students lead the effort to promote constructive action on behalf of their local schools. Students benefit:• Students develop literacy and communication skills, practice critical thinking, exercise leadership, and receive personalized attention.• Students increase their interest and performance in school through relevant, engaging school work. • Students are able to effectively communicate their spoken and written opinions, and gain increased confidence in themselves as they discover their ability to make a difference.• Students school-wide benefit from increased community involvement and support.Schools and Communities Benefit:• Schools have greater resources for teaching and learning as they benefit from increased community involvement and support.• Schools form mutually beneficial partnerships with the community to support the school's change efforts.• Individuals, local merchants, and community organizations are able to act on their beliefs about the education of local youth.
