Out of Harm's Way is a group of concerned citizens dedicated to supporting all dependent opiate users, family members of dependent opiate users, and at-risk adolescents and adults who have been impacted by the opioid epidemic. We were formed in response to the opioid crisis, one of the largest public health crises in America. Our current mission is to educate the general population on harm reduction strategies to curb harm and injuries related to opioid use and to destigmatize both opioid use and evidence-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs. We foster a grassroots, community-oriented approach to involve volunteers in the efforts to promote public education and legally-permitted strategies to support those who are directly impacted by the opioid epidemic.Over the last few decades, opioid abuse has become rampant across the nation. Over 20 million individuals are directly affected by opioid abuse, many of whom currently require treatment, but current medical resources are scarce and many lack the care they need. Additionally, there are many misconceptions about the nature of drug addiction and treatment programs that utilize medications. Out of Harm's Way focuses on education and outreach to reduce or prevent dependent opiate use. Our goal is to explain how the opioid crisis began and where the crisis stands today. We wish to destigmatize opioid abuse by employing a patient-oriented, harm reduction philosophy, minimizing the blame on opioid users themselves and focusing more on public health interventions to mitigate the consequences of opioid abuse. Through destigmatization, we also wish to empower current drug users to seek resources that will aid them on their path towards wellness.
