Healthcare Facility/Healthcare Services - N/A, NY, US
Our mission is to educate the Western New York community on the symptoms and risks of Ovarian Cancer, and to provide information on support and networking for women diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and their families. The WNY Ovarian Cancer Project was started by a few local women with Ovarian Cancer in response to a need for local support and information for women with Ovarian Cancer in WNY. Our founding members felt the isolation and fear that comes with a new diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer, and each did not know where to turn to find trustworthy information and to seek out other's who had survived this rare and deadly cancer. For each of these women, the first time they met face to face with another woman who had years of survival, was a powerful moment filled with hope. Another common bond of our founding member's is to educate other women on the symptoms and risks of Ovarian Cancer. As we looked back, some of us had classic symptoms of this cancer, but as we did not know what the symptoms were we passed them off as typical female ailments. Some of us tried to tell our doctors that something was wrong, but we never suggested they check for Ovarian Cancer. Some of us had higher risk factors that we were unaware of. We knew that educating other women on the symptoms and risks of Ovarian Cancer had to be part of our mission. Early diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer (at Stages I & II) has much higher survival rates than advanced stages. We want to empower other women with this information so that they can get diagnosed earlier, or be seen in a High Risk Screening Clinic.
