Ovo is developing South Dakota's first and only freestanding, accredited birth center. Birth centers utilize the midwifery model of care to offer regular well-woman clinic care and birth support to healthy women experiencing low-risk pregnancies. Birth centers demonstrate cesarean rates of just 6% as compared to the 32.7% overall cesarean rate reported by the CDC in 2013. This model of care is also associated with decreased postpartum depression rates and improved breastfeeding outcomes. Additionally, birth centers have consistently shown charges 50% less than hospitals for uncomplicated births. Birth center care is on the rise with a 56.3% increase in birth center births from 2007-2010 in the US.
