Philanthropy - Kolkata, West Bengal, India
The Oxford Mission in India has always been based in Kolkata (Calcutta), in Eastern India. It has been operating in the region since 1880, initially through the brotherhood of the Epiphany, and since 1902 by the sisterhood as well.Today the mission has a compound at Behala, to the south of the city, and provides a variety of much needed assistance to the community in which it is implanted. Much of the work is carried out by lay people, but it remains under the constant eye and support of both the Bishop of Kolkata and his team, and supporters from around the world, notably the UK.At Behala there is a boys' orphanage, St. Joseph's Primary School, an English-medium Primary School, Hostels, training schemes for less academic boys, and an ENT/Eye clinic. The new Mathieson Memorial Music Centre, set up in memory of Father Theodore, is now fully in use as a much grander replacement to the old band room. The OM boys use it for music practice and concerts and as an assembly room and it is available to other organisations and groups who wish to hire it.
