The idea for PA Reads YA began in 2020 when teens in Pittsburgh started to brainstorm how they could connect with peers as well as authors of young adult literature virtually during the pandemic. They created the Bridges & Books Podcast before deciding to expand their programming reach to literary programs throughout Pennsylvania both virtually and in-person. They formed PA Reads YA and developed a team of nearly 30 teens representing more than 10 counties in Pennsylvania. After working internally on leadership development and strategic planning in 2021, PA Reads YA officially launched in 2022.
