Parijat Desai is a multi-faceted choreographer exploring movement as a vehicle to process our complex individual and collective experiences, and also makes dance that expresses beauty, rhythm and joy. Critics have described their performances as "matching technical sophistication with thematic relevance" (Los Angeles Times) and as a "tensely fluid...unusual fusion" (Dance Magazine). With her ensemble, Parijat has created and performed various kinetic hybrids of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance. She also creates multidisciplinary works interweaving text, movement/dance, music, and design to explore the human experience and comment on the issues of our day. As Fulbright Scholar in India, Parijat created site-based movement processes in dialogue with both Indo-Islamic and modernist architectural structures. Through her program Dance In The Round, she is working with circle dances from Gujarat as a vehicle for community engagement and building collective energies. She teaches garba and raas (Gujarati circle dances) to people of all ages and abilities; and offers classes and workshops in contemporary dance, creative movement, and creative process to young people, adults, and professional dancers.
