Hospital & Health Care - Shoreview, Minnesota, United States
The Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation (Play For Patrick) is a Minnesota non-profit corporation formed in tribute to Patrick Schoonover, a seemingly healthy multi-sport athlete that at 14 years old died from sudden cardiac arrest while playing hockey. Patrick and his teammates were playing in a hockey tournament in Brainerd, Minnesota. He scored the game's first goal and collapsed moments later on the ice. First responders were unable to revive him. Patrick was a typical teenager who loved friends, family, school and sports. He had a heart condition that was not detected in physical examinations or otherwise discovered until after he collapsed. Patrick's sudden death was a tragedy. However, the publicity surrounding the event has raised critical awareness in the State of Minnesota and elsewhere regarding hidden dangers of undetected cardiovascular conditions and sparked a community-based effort to prevent further tragedies. The Foundation was created to help protect young adults in the community from sudden cardiac arrest ("SCA") by providing programs that permit early detection of heart defects and cardiovascular conditions, access to defibrillation and education that increases awareness. The Foundation works collaboratively with medical professionals and other organizations to identify heart defects and eliminate SCA in young adults by organizing and facilitating youth heart screenings and training students to perform "hands only" cardiopulmonary resuscitation ("CPR") and to use Automated External Defibrillators ("AED").
