Program Development - Laguna Niguel, California, United States
PB+J Foods Inc. is a Laguna Niguel based non-profit organization whose vision is to create worldwide self-sustainable fortified peanut butter paste factories, ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), while spreading the Gospel of Christ, and meeting the nutritional and economic needs in underdeveloped communities. The first program, The Nkhoma Hospital PB+J Program, started in Nkhoma, Malawi in August 2012. The Nkhoma Hospital PB+J Program has a manufacturing plant for RUTF, which is composed of peanuts, milk powder, brown sugar, palm oil and a micronutrient powder. The product is specifically designed to treat children under the age of five with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). With treatment of RUTF for 6-8 weeks, a child with SAM will gain an average of 2 kgs every 2 weeks and will regain strength to go on and lead a productive life. The Nkhoma Hospital PB+J Program reaches children suffering from SAM by distributing the RUTF to local health centers. This also provides an opportunity to provide nutrition education to equip individuals with the knowledge to prevent malnutrition, and preach the Gospel in the local region. In addition, the Nkhoma Hospital PB+J Program facilitates a peanut farmers co-op. The peanut is used as a cash crop to create economic growth, food stability and a steady supply of peanuts for the RUTF.
